Project Overview and Description
For my EDGE Project, I will be hosting a developmental and educational sports camp for at-risk youth in Mesa, Arizona over the holiday season. Mesa Public Schools actively encourages elementary and junior high school aged children to continue their education after graduation with programs like AVID in their district. Many children in Title 1 schools, low income, do not pursue an education, however, it has been shown that the participation in sports can encourage and tends to lead the pursuit of an extended education.
I will be the director of a two day camp designed to excite and educate younger students on the way their bodies work during sports. The camp will target boys and girls ages 10-15 years old who will work closely with myself and EXOS associate, Paul Taylor. My primary responsibilities will be the camp organization, planning, safety, marketing, and education of the participants. I am so excited to share my knowledge and love for exercise physiology that I have learned during my college career and to further my application skills of exercise testing and prescription.
Working this camp will give me the opportunity to directly apply the material I have been learning over the course of the last four years here at SUU. My ability to lead, problem solve, and educate will be utilized throughout the entire duration of the camp and its development. This camp truly excites me and allows me to combine the aspects of my life that bring me happiness that I cannot wait to share with others.
